CHAPTER SIX

It was the best sleep Xel had in a year. She opened her eyes, rays of light peeking through the shutters. Sounds of sizzling meat and the rich smell of coffee stirred her senses. Xel yawned and stretched. Leaning up on her elbows, she saw Teya busy making breakfast in the kitchen. He was exquisite. He wore only cotton pants. His long hair, tied with a piece of leather, cascaded down his muscular back. She watched him plate the food. He rearranged the orange slices twice and placed the small vase with a chocolate daisy on a tray, taking an abundance of time to arrange it perfectly.

Xel’s heart ached. This man truly cared for her. And she found herself starting to feel the same way. The image of Xi filled her mind. Xel took a deep breath and drove the thoughts of him down. He didn’t want her. Not after he saw what she was capable of. Xel could feel the flames dancing at her fingertips. Quickly, she balled her hands into fists.

The jeweled prince wasn’t interested in committing. He was a loose cannon. Whereas Teya, the handsome, strong, stable Teya, was giving her his all. Why was she even torn?

“You’re awake.” Teya smiled, turning around. “I made breakfast!”

“I can see that,” Xel said, taking the tray from him. “This is so incredibly sweet, Teya. Thank you.”

Stirring some sugar into the coffee cup, Xel took a sip. It was heavenly. Xel closed her eyes and enjoyed the simple pleasure of a hot cup of coffee.

“It’s also a bit self-serving,” Teya said, crossing his massive arms. “One, I am trying to convince you to stay in the underworld, and two, you are going to need all the strength you can get.”

Xel cocked her head, biting the side of a perfectly fried corn cake.

“Training starts today, remember?”

Xel’s eyes went wide. Suddenly, the corn cake lost all its flavor. She set it down politely and dabbed her mouth with the napkin. Xel set the tray on the bedside table. “Truthfully, watching you in the kitchen shirtless made me forget. But no rest for the wicked, I suppose.”

“None indeed,” Teya said, his eyes raking over her exposed leg peeking from the white duvet.

The front of his cotton pants became tighter; Xel pretended not to notice. She felt herself flush. Always the careful Metxtli. Always the Bone Gatherer who followed the rules and was the pillar of proper manners. Five hundred years of doing the right thing. Five hundred years of creating and following endless rules for herself. So many looked at her and saw perfection. Xel looked at herself as someone who had to prove her worth. Yet, with Teya, she didn’t feel she had anything to prove, and he barely knew her.

Xel slid the duvet over, revealing the length of her body. She smiled and bit her lip. Teya swallowed. She wore only the shift he had given her the night before. He had politely turned his back as she slid it over her naked body.
